Breast Cancer Screening Awareness

Early Detection Can Save Your Life

🩺 What Is Breast Screening?

Breast screening is a way of checking breasts for signs of cancer that may be too small to feel or see. The test used is called a mammogram – a low-dose X-ray that can detect early changes in breast tissue.

Screening helps find breast cancer early, often before symptoms appear, which improves the chances of successful treatment and survival.

👩 Who Is Invited?

  • Women aged 50 to 71 are invited every 3 years

  • You’ll receive a letter by post with your appointment details

  • Some people may be invited earlier if they are at higher risk

  •  If you’ve missed a previous screening or didn’t receive a letter, contact your local screening service on 01785 230 861.

📍 What Happens at a Mammogram?

  • You’ll visit a breast screening unit (some are mobile and visit local areas)

  • The test takes about 10–15 minutes

  • A female radiographer will position each breast on the X-ray machine

  • It may feel a little uncomfortable, but it only lasts a few seconds

  • Results are sent by post, usually within 2 weeks.

🔍 Why Is It Important?

  • 1 in 7 women in the UK will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime

  • Screening saves around 1,300 lives each year

  • Mammograms can detect cancers years before they can be felt

  • Early-stage breast cancer is much easier to treat
